The installation process will start SLmail for you and set the SLmail services to start up whenever your system starts.
Sometimes you may wish to manually stop or start SLmail. For example, whenever you add or delete a Secondary Domain or change any settings under the System or Options tabs, you will need to restart the SLmail POP3 service.
There are currently two services, which make up SLmail: Seattle Lab POP3 Server and Seattle Lab SMTP Server. The SMTP Server handles all inbound and outbound mail. It can continue running even when the POP3 Server is down, allowing you to continue receiving mail for later processing. The POP3 Server handles all other functions of mail service. When this document refers to stopping or starting SLmail, it is referring to the POP3 Server.
When the SLmail service is running, the light should be green. Click Stop to stop the service, and the light should change to red. To start the service, click Start. You may also click Pause to temporarily pause the service, and Start to resume.
This version of SLmail consists of Windows services that run within the operating system. This means that in normal use, SLmail is integrated with the operating system. Services do not appear on the desktop like normal applications; they must be controlled through the Windows Service Control Manager . This can be done from the Control page in the SLmail Web-based Administration utility, the Services tab from within the Control Panel Applet, or from a command prompt (cmd).
Windows services (including SLmail) may also be started and stopped from the Windows Service Control Manager . Double-click the Services icon on the (Windows) Control Panel. From the Service Control Manager, there are two services that run in SLmail: SLmail POP3 Server and SLmail SMTP Server. Select SLmail POP3 Server and click Stop to stop the POP3 service or Start to start it. Similarly, select SLmail SMTP Server and click Stop to stop the SMTP service or Start to start it.
You will observe that the Startup value for SLmail is Automatic. By clicking Startup at the right, you can choose to set the Startup value to Manual or Disabled. If you set the value to Manual, SLmail will not start when your Windows NT system starts. If you set the value to Disabled, you will not be able to start SLmail until you change the value back to Automatic or Manual.
In the SLmail Control Panel Applet, the service is controlled through the Control tab.
From the Control tab you can see the same stop light icon and to stop, pause, or start the SLmail service click the appropriate button. You will be prompted to confirm your selection by clicking the Yes button on a pop-up window.
Windows NT services may also be started and stopped from the Common Command Shell. The syntax is:
Note: If you use this method to stop SLmail, you will only need to specify slsmtp. Similarly, if you use this method to start SLmail you only need to specify SLmail. Both services will then respond simultaneously.
Note: Whenever you make any changes in the SLmail Web-based administration utility other than the adding, removing or modification of accounts, SLmail must be stopped and restarted in order for the changes to take effect.
