SLWebMail FAQ's

1) How do I back up my user accounts in SLWebMail?
User accounts can be backed up by running the SLWebMail User Data Export Program found in the SLMail Pro program group. You can now safely delete SLWebMail or move it to another computer, as you have successfully backed-up your user accounts. Simply import user data using the SLWebMail User Data Import Program

2) How do new users sign up in SLWebmail?
Users are not allowed to sign themselves up for SLWebMail accounts. All users accounts are administrator created

3) Why is there no way to automatically create users for SLWebmail?
We want to make sure we are providing you with a secure environment for your SLWebmail users. At this time, SLWebmail access must be created by the administrator.

4) How do I create SLWebmail accounts for users on SLMail Pro Secondary domains?

SLWebmail will not automatically import SLMail Pro users with accounts on SLMail Pro Secondary domains. SLWebmail will not automatically create accounts for the SLMail Pro Secondary domains. This is due the fact that users on SLMail Pro Secondary domains must pop their accounts with a POP3 username of:
username@secondarydomain.com. or secondarydomain.com\username

In order to create SLWebmail accounts for users on SLMail Pro Secondary domains you will first need to disable the Auto Create SLMail Pro User option. Do this by editing the mail5053.ini file found in your WINNT directory. Find the field:
[AUTOCREATE]
FLAG=1

Set the FLAG value to 0 (zero).
Save the changes.

In the SLWebmail Administration create a new user account. Assign this user an SLWebmail account name according to your naming convention that you determine. Example:
firstnamelastname or firstnamecompany. Or use the full email address of that user, matching the POP3 username as below.

In the POP3 server settings, specify the IP address of the SLMail Pro POP3 server. For POP3 username, enter the email address of the SLMail Pro user account: username@secondaydomain.com. Enter that user's POP3 password.

5) How do I configure the SLWebmail user login to be the default page in my root directory?
In order to access the SLWebmail user page by simply entering the URL: http://yourdomain.com (where yourdomain.com is the DNS name of the server or its IP address):
1. Open Internet Services Manager in IIS.
2. Right click on the Default Web Site and choose properties.
3. Specify the start up document as: Inetpub\wwwroot\SLWebmail\login.htm
4. OK the changes.

6) How do I edit the SLWebmail Navigation Frame?
If you would like to customize your SLWebmail pages, you must edit the directory files. This cannot be done by accessing the HTML page from a browser and making the changes in the View Source window. It must be done with an HTML editor on the SLWebmail host.

To edit the Left Navigation Frame you must access the following directory:

X:\Inetpub\Scripts\SLWebmail\templates\ENGLISH\Webmail\folders.htm

Note: X is the appropriate drive where SLWebmail is installed.

Navigate to these SLWebmail directories in Windows Explorer, and then use any HTML editor to make the desired changes. SeattleLab suggests saving a copy of the original file(s) before you edit them to refer to in the event that the file is modified to the point it becomes unusable.
7) What are the little red numbered boxes in the Inbox?
SLWebmail flags email in the Inbox with the email address to which the mail was sent as well as the POP3 account number (the red 1, 2, 3 or 4). To display the email account name for the user, mouse over the red POP3 account number.

In addition, when a user responds to email, SLWebmail enters the email address the mail was originally sent to in the Reply To field.

For example: I send to accounts 1 and 2, reply to both accounts, the reply to field in the outgoing message will reflect the email address of the appropriate account number. This feature enhancement enables "multiple personalities" similar to some leading stand-alone email clients.

8) How do I change the Administrator login in SLWebmail?
Log on to the SLWebMail Administration, http://yourdomain.com/slwebmail/adminlogin.htm. Go to Edit User Account and select the administrator account. Change the Administrator password here.

9) What if I've forgotten the Administrator password?

To reset the Administrator password back to the default, edit the mail5053.ini file located in SLWebmail\Vendors\users. Replace the AdminID line with the following string:

AdminID=098102112109115111122124123107127123127_098102112109115111122124123107127123127_066102112109115

Save the file after making changes.

10) How does the Administrator change the passwords for SLWebmail users?
Log on to the SLWebmail Administration, http://yourdomain.com/slwebmail/adminlogin.htm. Go to Edit User Account and select the account that you wish to have the password changed.

11) Can I change the user mailbox quota size after installing SLWebmail?

User mailbox size in SLWebmail is global, affecting all user accounts. But you can change the quota size after installing SLWebmail. Edit the mail5053.ini file located in \SLWebmail\Vendors\users. Set the BOXSIZE with the size (in MB) of the user mailbox quota that you wish to set.

12) Can I share an address book among all users?

The address book for SLWebmail is stored in

SLWebmail/Vendors/users/(user name in hex)/addressbook

Log in to a user account and create one address book. To move the address book to every other user, copy that folder to the different user accounts.

13) What are dormant accounts and how can I delete them?

Dormant accounts are those that have been unused for a period of time as defined by the SLWebMail administrator. Dormant accounts and the email that they contain take up disk space. The Account Watch utility allows the SLWebMail administrator to monitor dormant accounts, however.

To access the Account Watch utility: On the task bar click Start, point at Programs, then SLWebMail, and click SLWebMail Account Watch. Enter the number of days beyond which you would like to remove the users who haven't been accessing their email. For example, if you wish to define a dormant account as one that has been unused for 30 days, select 30 days in the listbox. SLWebMail will then identify those accounts for you so that you can delete them. If you are coordinating SLWebMail with SLMail Pro, SLWebMail will ask if you wish to delete the associated SLMail Pro accounts as well.

Note: Account Watch is not a utility that runs in the background; it must be periodically executed to perform.

14) Can I change the default banner that displays "YOUR BANNER AD HERE !!"?

To change the default banner in SLWebmail, you need to create the new banner. Once the new banner is created, you want to rename the banner to banner.gif and place the file in:

Inetpub/wwwroot/SLWebmail/images

Next, you need to change the banner.htm (in Inetpub/wwwroot/SLWebmail/WebMail) so that if the user clicks on the banner, it will load the web site in another window. Change the line <a href="http://sponsor/path/wherever.htm"> to <a href="website address" TARGET="_blank">
